The city of Hickory, NC, started out as "Hickory Tavern" in 1863. Originally a large log tavern under the shade of a hickory tree, the town officially dropped the "Tavern" a decade later, when it received a charter. A strong focus on furniture manufacturing and transportation fostered its early growth, bringing many residents and economy to the city. In the years following World War II, Hickory was the site of one of the worst outbreaks of polio. Inadequate treatment of victims caused the citizens themselves, in coordination with the March of Dimes, to build a hospital to combat the outbreak. The hospital was fully functional within 54 hours of conception, making it the "Miracle of Hickory." In 1974, the downtown area was restored and the now-abandoned train depot transformed into a popular restaurant. Hickory, NC, has been honored with the title of "All-American City" three times - an award given to only 10 cities annually for outstanding civic accomplishments - in 1967, 1987 and 2007.
